Note: We figured it was time for a new, updated, history. According to Dodger, one is in the works. -Ed. Aug 2006
SpecialDetachment was formed as a tournament team, prior to insertion into the Alpha Squad SSL 2003 tourney. The team went through major internal changes after Alpha Squad’s SR2003 tourney, and promptly disbanded. Many of its members left for other popular teams. With only one surviving member left (Patriot+SD) SpecialDetachment was nearly a memory. But shortly thereafter, Patriot brought a new team member into the Squad, EWJ. With the help of former team leader, Lingus, Patriot added two new recruits, bringing the total number of team members to 4. This revitalized the hope that +SD would be once again.
In November of 2003, +SD inserted into Mission 1 of the BadAzzDanes AzzCup Tournament. Soon thereafter, Patriot, the last original member carrying the +SD flag in hand and tag in heart, asked Marshall to join and become the teams Commanding Officer. Soon after, and with the consent of the teams founding and elite members, Marshall accepted the leadership role and began the long daunting task of revitalizing the new unit. Marshall created a constitution, web site, forums, and roster. With the help of former team leader, Lingus, the ranks began to swell, and in the first month of December 2003 SpecialDetachment was reborn.
As per the new constitution, a council was formed to help govern. It consisted of Patriot (vice leader), Dodger (pro tempore) and Smokin. By the middle of December Leon, Bullwinkle, Zack, and AsRock filled out the squad. EWJ was called to real duty and became inactive, leaving 7 total members. With only a week to get to know each other +SD inserted into Mission 2 of the AzzCup Tourney.
Mission 2 synopsis: Right off the bat things went wrong as Patriot and Smokin found a mine. After clearing a sniper nest, the rest of the squad advanced to overlook the camp. A keyhole sniper killed Dodger but was taken out by Marshall. Setting up in overwatch on the camp the squad made short work of the guards and prepared to advance. At this point Zack lost his connection and Dodger took over his rifleman. Marshall, Leon, and Bullwinkle advanced toward the camp, only to die during the ambush in multiple explosions- they all lost their lives to mines. At the same time, Dodger lost his mic, which further complicating things. The only 2 surviving members could not communicate. After searching for any more enemies, Dodger and AsRock advanced on the camp and freed the POW. Dodger led off toward extraction, while AsRock covered the rear. As Dodger approached the spot where Patriot and Smokin had fallen, he detected multiple tangos approaching. Looking on the command map he saw AsRock next to the POW. Assuming AsRock had taken control of the POW, and aware that they were running short on time, Dodger made a bold and deadly move. He switched to GL and advanced, killing several Tangos before falling in an attempt to clear a path to extraction. Unfortunately, Dodger had control over the POW and he was killed while following Dodger’s advance. AsRock attempted to make a stealthy exit, but was picked off by enemy rifle-fire glitching though a hilltop. The mission score for +SD was a modest 30 points.
December saw the first meeting of the +SD Council. In mid December Delloman and Auto signed on. This reinforced the squad as they prepared for insertion into AzzCup Mission 3.
Mission 3 synopsis: The team fanned out in formation looking for mines and scanning for tangos when they received a warning that enemy troops including at least 1 tank had been spotted moving in on their 6. The vehicles that had carried them into battle would have to be abandoned and the enemy SA-13 taken out to allow helicopter extraction. As soon as the first ridge was crested several tangos were spotted and dispatched but then a tank came down the east-west road and major lag hit the squad. Before the tank had passed-by, members using dial up were incapacitated. The squad scattered seeking shelter from the tank. Zack (AT), Lingus (Rifleman), Delloman (Sniper) and AsRock (Rifleman) all lay dead, as major lag problems persisted. Marshall rallied the troops and pressed on toward the fort. Smokin, with silent sniper rifle in hand, cleared the guard towers with ease as Marshall and Patriot cleaned out the forces in the center of the fort. Smokin was wounded in the leg when the tank returned. He stayed in position to cover the rear as the squad cleared out the buildings and Dodger planted demo on the APC. After the vehicle blew Patriot and Marshall took point leading to the SA-13. Smokin, who lacked the necessary dexterity, was finished off by the tank as he tried to cross the road. Dodger planted the charge on the SA-13, and the reduced squad made a break for the bridge, in search for the pilot and the data tape. As they closed on the bridge a Platoon of tangos came at them from all sides. Marshall fell in a hail of bullets from a group advancing from the north. Patriot and Dodger engaged troops coming up out of the gorge and across the bridge. When all was said and done only Patriot remained. He immediately crawled for the extraction zone, unaware that we had not received any points thus far. Unfortunately, points could only be earned by doing three things: retrieving data tape, rescuing the pilot, or by keeping KIA's low. Patriot extracted and the mission was complete. The mission score was 0 points.
Despite eliminating 32 bad guys by himself, and saving face for +SD by extracting with only 5 minutes left in the game, Patriot was so distraught by his apparent failure he took a leave of absence from the team. Patriot’s leave of absence left a council position to be filled. AsRock was moved into the council, as Dodger became Vice Leader and Smokin became the Pro Tempore.
In January of 2004, the squad was bolstered by the addition of Fuzz, thE dOn, Sevarius, and mrlenjr. The council granted Marshall executive power to promote Lingus, the leader of the old squad, to Elite status. The squad practiced as a unit, and prepared for AzzCup 4.
Upon Insertion into Mission 4 of the AzzCup Tourney, the lag was so apparent that [BAD] decided to reschedule our insertion. The team looked forward to the February insertion, and the completion of AzzCup.
However, February started on a sour note as Lingus and Patriot had a falling out, after a month-long argument. Both moved to inactive status, as they requested ejection from the team. The rest of the squad prepared for insertion.
Mission 4 synopsis: The mission was set for 10:00 EST on Sunday the 15th. Marshall, AsRock, and Dodger meet on teamspeak and awaited the rest of the squads' arrival. At the appointed time no one else had logged on so Marshall requested 2nd Ranger to help out. As the four prepared to start thE dOn and Sevarius joined up, so a reduced but excited squad made insertion. Unfortunately, 5 minutes into the mission Dodger lost connection- his sniper's body followed Marshall around. The squad moved around the western part of the castle eliminating all opposition. Marshall Ranger, thE d0n, and Sevarius Set-up and faced the East entrance, while AsRock covered southwest. The team made noise, enticing the enemy to breach the Eastern entrance, charge out, and die in a bloody battle. AsRock kept a close eye on the Tank parked outside the western entrance, and engaged the patrols coming from the South and West- rendering the enemy ineffective. In the middle of all this, a patrol came around the north wall and shot 2nd Ranger. Marshall took care of the north patrol, while 2nd Ranger switched to the sniper’s body. AsRock covered the north and western entrance, allowing Marshall to turn the T-80 into "Russian scrap." All other opposition was eliminated with no additional losses. AsRock, thE dOn, and Sevarius moved to breach the entrance and clear the houses when twin blast ripped through the darkness- A pair of mines in the entrance cost +SD 20 points and 3 members. 2nd Ranger engaged a patrol as Marshall charged in and eliminated the last guards around the hostage. With only a few minutes left Marshall, covered by 2nd Ranger, moved to extraction earning the squad 80 points.
